IAD 2010, Pune

IAD celebration in Pune this time was much different than the past 2 years.  26th Oct was the day.  Toolbox Animation Studio, the studio I work for, supported the event like the previous years.  I had been present  in the event in 2008 and 2009, but just as a attendee.  This time though, I was a part of the organizing team, as a volunteer.  The previous day, I was told that I would be escorting Max Howard, Shelley Page and Ed Hooks from the hotel they were staying at, to the venue of the event.  The moment I heard it, I lost my senses.  I was going to meet Ed Hooks, Theeeeeee Mr. Ed Hooks, who needs no introduction, a very eminent actor, theater personality and the author of the book Acting for Animators.  Forgive my ignorance and lack of knowledge, but I hadn't known or read about Max Howard.  So I looked up the internet and read some pages about him.  Some links that will give you some info:

Shelley Page, again needs no introduction,  head of global outreach, DreamWorks, was also amongst the speakers for the day.

Max Howard during the session
Some points Max gave during his session:

3 things to remember:
Story, Story, Story

An 8 step journey: (examples from the Pixar Animation Film - Finding Nemo (2003)

Step 1 - The Setup
Where are we
Who are we

For example:
This is the reef and we are so scared of the outside world

Step 2 - The Inciting Incident
Something happens
The Call to Adventure

For example:
Nemo is kidnapped

Step 3 - Ready, Steady, Go
We're off on the adventure

For example:
To find Nemo

Step 4 - The Journey
Adapting
Experimenting
Getting it together
Being broken down

Step 5 - Find
We found what we were looking for
but........
how do we get it

Step 6 - Success but Wait.....
Something unexpected happens

For example:
A new filter in the fish tank

Step 7 - The Triumphant Finale
Overcoming the ultimate challenge
And return with the treasure

For example:
We've reunited with Nemo!

Step 8 - Full Circle
Life will never be the same

Who we were from Step 1..
The hero has grown and changed, along with the world we journeyed through

Max, Q&A session
Later, Max also spoke about how to pitch a story.

Acting for Animation by Ed hooks

Ed Hooks
Ed Hooks quickly took us through the film The Iron Giant (1999), and as the film progressed, he gave us pointers on acting and story.  The time was less, but quite informative.  How I wish, I had attended the masterclass on the previous day.

So, to sum up, the day was really great.  Looking forward to meet many more experts from the industry and learn from them, and hopefully work with them.

Last, but not the least.
